Bus tickets to barbecues, city property thefts run gamut

Sticky-fingered thieves make off with peculiar property belonging to Phoenix.

Pilfered property ranges from full-size refrigerators to four 25-foot-long traffic poles. From a barbecue grill in a park to a 7- by 8-foot storage shed, 300 bus tickets and even "metal letters, possibly aluminum, spelling out Palo Verde Branch," according to police reports.

Often the property is sold on the black market, but sometimes "some (steal) for the challenge, to see if they can get away with it" police Sgt. Randy Force said.

"The barbecue grill is in someone's back yard, we just don't know whose," Force said.

Although most stolen items are never recovered, sometimes luck or sheer coincidence intervenes for investigators.

Take the case of the "Red Man Suit," a foam suit used by police for tactical training recovered after police responded to a domestic-violence call. A woman who was upset with her boyfriend told the officers who responded to the call that the boyfriend had a stash of stolen gear in a hole in a bedroom closet, including the $1,000 foam suit. The gear was stolen by movers who were responsible for transferring it to a surplus facility.

Or the case of the Papago Golf Course vending machine. It is presumed to have been loaded onto a truck from a garage and was later found on a dirt road nearby, "damaged and covered in mud," according to a police report.

The crooks were found hiding in a storm drain on Van Buren Street.
